Presenting the Varnish Paywall at the World Publishing Expo

It is becoming increasingly common that online media require their readers to pay for access to premium content by setting up paywalls. The challenge is however that paywalls can slow down websites. With our solution, The Varnish Paywall, this is no longer a problem.

Next week (29.-31. Oct.) Varnish Software is going to the World Publishing Expo (WAN-IFRA) in Frankfurt, the annual gathering of the news media industry. As we’ve mentioned in an earlier blog the whole media industry is facing challenges as ad sales have been on a downward spiral for years and circulation for printed media continues to fall.

Relying on a business model that is based entirely on advertising is therefore no longer viable and most media houses (if not all) have either already changed their business models or are considering to do so. The new models are commonly based on having readers pay for access to content in addition to advertising.

A speedier, more scalable paywall alternative

When it comes to picking a pay-for-access solution, commonly referred to as a paywall, media houses are faced with a challenge. Providing a pay-for-access service implies setting quite complex rules for content access based on the different types of readers and the primary content they want access to. These rules have traditionally, and due to their complexity, been placed in the application server layer. However, this has the downside of slowing down the website’s performance and making it less scalable.

At this stage you may be wondering why our presence at the World Publishing Expo is relevant to this blog post?  It’s simple. We believe we can offer the media industry a solution to their challenge. A solution that will make the pay-for-access option very feasible, fast and easy to deploy: The Varnish Paywall. With the Varnish Paywall the pay-for-access rules are placed within Varnish’s caching layer which ensures that media houses can rest assured that their websites will remain fast and scalable (possibly even more so) after deploying the Varnish Paywall and that their content will be delivered equally fast to subscribers as to non-subscribers.

We look forward to presenting the Varnish Paywall to the leaders of the media and publishing world and are positive they will receive it with open arms, as many others already have.
